Humanistic Psychology
The humanistic way of working values people first, listens to individuals and works from the inside out.
Many of our ethics and values are expressed by our Guidelines for IDHP Courses, and in this short paper by Paul Barber.
These are our values:- We are a virtual organisation with no hierarchy
- We believe in the unique potential of each individual
- We attempt to be open and authentic in all our relationships with people
- We support and challenge each other
- We’re about learning and development
- We set time aside for reflecting on the process
- We pay attention to drawing out meaning and significance, so that we may learn and develop.
- We learn through exploring our feelings, our values, our hopes and fears, and our spirituality.
These are our guiding principles:
- Working as a peer community
We work with democracy, recognising the tension that comes with this way of working, staying in discussion and dialogue.
- Whole person learning
We recognise that the whole person is involved in learning and that an important part of that learning is experiential. We aim to include the emotional or feeling sense, the physical, the spiritual, the intuitive, our social nature and the mind.
- Belief in human potential
We champion our innate ability to learn from experience, celebrating the unique potential of each individual. We are aware of ourselves, and our potential, in the context of other people, and aware of our joint potential in working together.
- Self & Environment
We practice listening to the wisdom of the body and the natural world both as foundation and guide to what is happening inside ourselves, in our relationships, in our future and in the web of human connection and conflict.
- Open door to inquiry
Ongoing learning and development is the goal of our work. We give space and attention to the whole process – taking time to reflect and draw out meaning and significance. We embrace a sense of curiosity, enquiry, paradox and ambiguity.
